Implementation
At our school, the primary focus is on learning, which is fundamental to all activities and experiences.
At Tamaris International School, Reading, English and Mathematics are taught daily. History, Geography, Science, Computing, Religious Education, Languages (in KS2), PSHE, PE and Music are taught weekly, and Art and Design Technology in alternate weeks.
Our commitment to fostering a love for reading in children makes the inclusion of quality texts essential to our curriculum. We understand that reading fluency allows children to fully engage with all aspects of the curriculum. It is our belief that students should graduate from our school with the ability to express themselves clearly and to read and write with confidence and effectiveness. Each quality text we select serves as a foundation for our writing sequence and is accompanied by various supportive texts, ensuring that children frequently encounter a diverse array of narratives, non-fiction, and poetry.
Mathematics is delivered following the White Rose Scheme of Learning. In addition to this, there is a daily Maths Express time where children are able to practise and consolidate key skills and concepts. This is to ensure they are keeping 'on track' and becoming more confident in their recall and understanding.
Every classroom is designed to engage and immerse children in their learning experiences. Each learning environment reflects both current and past teachings, aiming to bring lessons to life. This includes pertinent texts and display materials. Consequently, the environment plays a vital role in enhancing and enriching the learning experiences for everyone.
We strive to make certain that children recognize the significance and purpose behind their learning, designing each sequence to culminate in a meaningful outcome at the end of the theme. This provides children with a chance to present their learning to a broader audience, whether through an end-of-unit essay, an exhibition for the entire school, a presentation during assembly to families, or by publishing a class text.
At the heart of our endeavors lies a commitment to high-quality, thoughtfully executed teaching. The curriculum is structured to provide a carefully sequenced learning experience, enhancing knowledge and skills progressively, both within individual year groups and throughout the school. It is designed to connect new information with prior understanding, fostering a continuous learning journey. By nurturing these educational pathways, we create numerous opportunities for students to practice and apply their knowledge across various contexts, facilitating deep, lasting learning and helping them retain and recall more information.
Our approach to effectively implementing our intended curriculum involves cultivating an environment where collaboration and professional discussions among subject leaders result in a curriculum that builds on prior knowledge, deepens understanding, and enhances skills that promote learning and success. We will participate in an ongoing cycle of review and evaluation to evaluate progress and achievements, ensuring that learning remains relevant, up-to-date, and properly adjusted to cater to the diverse needs of all students.
Alongside our academic curriculum, we ensure the whole-child is supported through events and activities planned outside of the classroom. For example: with planned-for outdoor learning in our Forest School and ponds areas; by utilising links with the wider community; taking children on residential visits in both years 4 and 6; taking part in charity days and events; by joining with other schools in our trust to share experiences such as the Year 6 Box Car Rally and sporting events. A wide range of clubs and enrichment activities such as individual music lessons, sporting matches, gardening competitions, music and dance festivals, singing in the Cathedral are a regular occurrence in our school. These are a vital part of each child’s development as life-long learners and ensure that individual talents are celebrated.
